Underwater Snorkeling Museum Cancun, Mexico

We planned a day snorkeling in Cancun during our recent trip to Mexico. We chose to go with MUSA (Museo Subacuatico de Arte). The tour company departs from the hotel zone in Cancun. There are over four hundred sculptures with different galleries submerged under the sea. Unfortunately, it is not possible to see all of the galleries in one day. During our trip, we were able to see Punta Nizuc gallery which is only 4 meters deep, perfect for our snorkeling trip. MUSA also hosts scuba diving excursions and one is able to see sculptures that are more deeply submerged. Hands down the most unique art gallery I have ever seen in my life. The coral reefs in Cancun have drawn in a large amount of tourism, which has led to the disruption of the coral reefs and marine life. Snorkeling on this excursion draws tourists away from the coral reef to an incredible artificial one. The sculptures submerged also stimulate coral growth that will eventually help to combat global warming and the damage from tourism on the coral reef. The two sculptures we were able to see were Understanding by Elier Amado Gil where 6 figures sit around a round table. The second per our guide was the Headless sculpture.

Before arriving at the art gallery, everyone gets their own speedboat (a group of 3-4 can be in one speedboat). A guide leads the way, while you drive around 40 minutes through Cancun’s coastline and the mangroves. I’m not sure what my favorite part is, snorkeling or attempting to drive a small speedboat.

Review of MUSA: The boat left on time. Bathrooms and dining available at the facility. The motorboats were older and we had one technical issue, however it was quickly fixed by our tour guide. Our tour guide was AMAZING. He guided us around the sculptures and discussed the different marine life. The tour online states that it is a 3 hour tour, but we were done in around 2 hours.Other than our time being shortened, I would recommend this excursion group! Linking them here.

What to Bring for Snorkeling: You should wear a swim-suit, coverup, and flip flops. The snorkeling company provides you complimentary water, snorkel gear (new snorkel mouthpiece), and lifejackets. Linking my favorite black swim suit. I love Aerie swimwear especially swim bottoms I think they have some of the best coverage and has swimwear for all sizes. However, wearing a sold out DKNY swim top. Linked similar! Sharing how I got these shots. The go pro dome which is an accessory for the go pro. It’s a dome that fits over the go pro that allows one to get a wide angle possible to capture both above and below water shots. Also just the floating hand strap that’s included with the dome is worth it! Especially since I always fear I may drop it during adventures and it will be lost. I used the go pro 8 for this shot which I love!

This would be a really cool experience. Does the same company do diving trips?

My parents are in Mexico right now – they love stuff like this, so I will have to tell them about it for their next trip (they go back often and plan to move there!)

This is really cool…I’ve never heard of an underwater museum. Your pictures are beautiful! I have a GoPro dome but a much older GoPro model….I need to upgrade one of these days!
